The office of Lieutenant Governor was created by the Constitution of 1864 and existed from 1865-1868. It was reestablished in 1970 by a constitutional amendment ratified in 1970 (Chapter 532, Acts of 1970). The lieutenant governor is elected for a four year term by popular vote at the same election in which the governor is elected, and his term begins on the third Wednesday in January following the election.
